How to do it

The process for obtaining an LGV/PCV licence is:-

  • Provisional licence       

For this you will have a medical and apply to DVLA

  • Module 1            

Theory tests Multiple choice and Hazard perception

  • Module 2

Theory test CPC Case study (if required)

  • Module 3

Practical driving test

  • Module 4

CPC Practical Demonstration(if required)

If you are taking a C1, C, D1, D test you will need to have a medical, obtain your provisional licence and have passed the theory tests for your category of vehicle. If you are taking BE, CE, DE or are removing a restriction, you will automatically have a provisional licence and will not need to take a theory test or initial CPC.

The categories of licence with minimum age are as follows:-

Cat BE:    Car and Trailer (age 17)
Cat C1:    Lorry up to 7.5 tonnes (age 18)
Cat C:      Rigid lorry (age 18 from Sept 2009 with CPC)
Cat CE:    Articulated lorry (age 18 from Sept 2009 with CPC)
Cat D1:    Minibus up to 17 seats (age 18)
Cat D:      Coach over 17 seats ( age 21 but restricted licence at 18 with CPC)
Cat DE:    Coach and Trailer (age 21 but restricted licence at 18 with CPC)
